C\u2019\u00e9tait une journ\u00e9e comme les autres. Je travaillais au Rogers Centre \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9mission \u00ab Blue Jays Central \u00bb sur Sportsnet.<\/p>\n

\u00c0 ce moment-l\u00e0, Gregg Zaun \u00e9tait l\u2019analyste \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9mission. Nous \u00e9tions des amis.<\/p>\n

Gregg et moi, on faisait souvent souvent des farces, parfois inappropri\u00e9es, je l\u2019admets, sur le plateau. Des farces d\u2019homosexuels qui, si elles \u00e9taient entendues hors contexte, pourraient \u00eatre mal re\u00e7ues, surtout par d\u2019autres gais.<\/p>\n

Et \u2026 on blaguait comme \u00e7a pr\u00e8s des micros ouverts et les techniciens qui travaillent \u00e0 la r\u00e9gie pouvaient entendre nos plaisanterie sur leur intercom.<\/p>\n

Un jour, le producteur de l\u2019\u00e9mission m\u2019a appel\u00e9 : \u00ab Je voulais juste que tu saches qu\u2019on a dans la r\u00e9gie un nouveau technicien qui est gai. Ce serait mieux de laisser faire vos farces plates \u00bb.<\/p>\n

Notre petit jeu s\u2019est arr\u00eat\u00e9 d\u2019un seul coup \u00e9videmment.<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s \u00e7a, c\u2019\u00e9tait devenu ma mission dans la vie de rencontrer cet op\u00e9rateur de la r\u00e9gie qui \u00e9tait gai. Il n\u2019\u00e9tait plus le seul \u00e0 Sportsnet. Qui \u00e9tait cet autre employ\u00e9 gai qui osait trouver sa place \u00e0 Sportsnet?<\/p>\n

De retour au travail, la fois suivante, je cherchais nerveusement \u00e0 faire la connexion avec ce nouvel op\u00e9rateur gai \u00e0 la r\u00e9gie.<\/p>\n

Je n\u2019avais jamais pass\u00e9 autant de temps \u00e0 tra\u00eener \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur de la salle de contr\u00f4le de l\u2019audio. C\u2019\u00e9tait difficile. Le nouveau \u00e9tait si jeune. Il avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 son monde \u00e0 lui. Et j\u2019\u00e9tais si maladroit lorsque je rencontrais des gens que je ne connaissais pas! Rien ne progressait.<\/p>\n

Je suis rest\u00e9 derri\u00e8re \u00e0 la fin de notre quart de travail. Je pensais qu\u2019on pourrait peut-\u00eatre marcher ensemble, lui et moi, \u00ab tout naturellement \u00bb au d\u00e9part du travail. Mais j\u2019ai vu St\u00e9phane peser le bouton de l\u2019ascenseur du stationnement. Par hasard, il avait une auto lou\u00e9e ce jour-l\u00e0 et il n\u2019avait pas besoin d\u2019un pouce. Tout a fini l\u00e0. Sans m\u00eame qu\u2019une conversation puisse commencer.<\/p>\n

Je n\u2019aurais pas d\u2019autres shifts avec lui pendant longtemps.<\/p>\n

It was a day like many others. I was working at the Rogers Centre on Sportsnet\u2019s Blue Jays Central show.<\/p>

Gregg and I would often joke around, admittedly inappropriately, on set. Gay jokes, which taken out of context, might be taken offensively, specifically by other gays.<\/p>

And\u2026 these would be done around open mics, which could be heard by control room operators on their intercom panels.<\/p>

One day, the producer of the show that day called me. \u201cJust wanted you to know, we have a new control room operator here who is gay. You guys may want to tone down your jokes.\u201d<\/p>

This happened immediately of course.<\/p>

But it also became a mission for me to meet this other gay person at Sportsnet. I wasn\u2019t the only one anymore. Who was this other gay who dared make Sportsnet their home?<\/p>

His next shift at the station scheduled with this gay control room operator was spent nervously trying to make some sort of connection.<\/p>

I had never spent so much time out of the audio room. But it was hard. This op was so young. Seemed to have his own vibe going already.\u00a0\u00a0And with me being as awkward as I was meeting new people, I didn\u2019t really make any progress.<\/p>

So I lagged behind leaving after the shift. Thinking that maybe there could be a \u201cnatural\u201d bit of a walk together as work was departed. But St\u00e9phane hit the parking elevator. He randomly had a rental car that day and had driven himself. So that\u2019s where it ended. Before any real communication began.<\/p>

I wouldn\u2019t work a shift again with him for a very long time.<\/p>
