Will You Go On A Trip With Me?
We both worked at Sportsnet in the control room at the time. A good friend of Stéphane’s was getting married and doing a destination wedding. She invited a group from work including Stéphane.
He accepted, but was struggling a bit with who to take with him. Should he just split a room with one of the other singles from the Sportsnet group? Not really what you want to do on any trip, much less a vacation trip – split a room with a work colleague.
Side note: good thing he didn’t. That work college he would’ve roomed with found someone on that trip, and they’re now married with kids.
So… he asked me. We were friends. Not dating (yet). We weren’t really out at work as friends even. Didn’t want the rumour mill swirling about what was up with the 2 gays at the network hanging out.
So it was a huge thing for Stéphane to ask if I could come as his plus one. The tides shifted at work a bit. People would know we were friends.
We booked an upgraded room. One where we’d have more privacy. We were determined to keeping our relationship, whatever it was, to ourselves for now, especially with work colleagues.
This was all planned months ahead of time… things would change quickly and drastically before the trip actually happened.
But, it was the moment we had our coming out as friends at work.
