The Big Move
In Toronto, one of the big perks of being in a relationship is being able to split your bills in half. So it was only natural that conversations about moving in together and sharing an apartment started happening fairly early on in the relationship. Besides, since we were already living in the same condo building, we were spending a lot of time at each other’s suites. It felt a little wasteful to have these two separate spaces.
I started making arrangements for my eventual move out of my 1 bedroom unit to Ian’s 2 bedroom unit. At the time, Ian had a roommate, his friend Brien. Conveniently, Brien was looking to move out and get his own place. We agreed that the best scenario would be if Brien and I swapped units. So I transferred my lease to Brien and moved in with Ian.
This felt really natural but was also a big change. I had never lived with anyone else since my residence days in university, and I never lived with a dog ever.
Ian and I worked together to pick and choose the furniture that we’d want to have in our new space together. A lot of things we already owned were from when we were students so this move gave us a chance to invest in more adult furnishings and choose the décor that matched us as a couple.
One of the first purchases we made for our new home together was a king size mattress. That was non-negotiable.
Following the move, we continued to slowly make this box in the sky our own.
